About ESIC

Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESIC) is a multidimensional social security system tailored to provide socio-economic protection to beneficiaries covered under the scheme. The Employees' State Insurance Act promulgated by the Parliament in 1948encompasses certain health related eventualities that the workers are generally exposed to, such as sickness, maternity, temporary or permanent disablement, Occupational disease or death due to employment injury, resulting in loss of wages or earning capacity-total or partial.

The ESI Act applies to non-seasonal factories employing ten or more persons in a power using factory and twenty or more persons in a non-power using factory. The provisions have also been extended gradually to other establishments such as shops, hotels and restaurants, road and motor transport undertakings, newspaper establishments and cinema halls.ESI is today one of the largest social security schemes in Southeast Asia covering 1.5 crore insured family unit.

The Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the administrative control of Ministry of Labour& Employment, Government of Indiais a statutory body constituted to administer the ESI scheme.
